Roberto Gerhard

The creation of this web resource is part of an UK Research and Innovation-funded project entitled Gerhard Revealed. The project team comprise Prof Monty Adkins and Dr Samuel Gillies along with colleagues at Heritage Quay — the archive service at the University of Huddersfield and the Music and Digital Archives Teams at the Cambridge University Library.

The project is a development of Prof Monty Adkins’ Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded The Electronic Music of Roberto Gerhard (2012-13) undertaken with Dr Gregorio Karman and Dr Carlos Duque which involved digitising Gerhard’s tape archive held at the Cambridge University Library. This resulted in a unique audio resource that, as well as being used as the starting point for research outcomes from the original project (The Roberto Gerhard Companion, Ashgate, 2013) has also been used for further research.

The Gerhard Revealed resource makes available the audio recordings of Gerhard’s electronic music uncovered as part of the original AHRC-funded project in the form of a website and an online searchable and listenable database along with photographs of the tapes, boxes and ephemera found with them, all of which is supplemented by detailed explanation of Gerhard’s approach to electronic music and details of his works in this field.

The complete tape archive has been digitised and integrated into this web resource. Whilst the electronic music works and materials relating to these can be listened to online, the complete archive which includes recordings of Gerhard’s instrumental works and those of other composers he admired can only be listened to by visiting the archive at Heritage Quay.

We’d love to hear your feedback on the Roberto Gerhard Digital Archive and its resources! Please consider filling in our feedback form.
